Psalm 29:3-9 – “3The voice of the LORD is over the waters; The God of glory thunders; The LORD is over many waters. 4The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is full of majesty. 5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, Yes, the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon. 6He makes them also skip like a calf, Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire. 8The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; The LORD shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh.9The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth, And strips the forests bare; And in His temple everyone says, “Glory!”

This beautiful psalm extols the awesomeness of the Voice of God. The voice of a person expresses a person’s character, thoughts and emotions and attracts attention by its tone and volume. And here is an awe-inspiring exaltation of the voice of God! God still speaks to us in many ways; to those who study the Word of God, the Holy Bible, through the man of God, through songs and hymns, through circumstances and through the Holy Spirit. And God has given His children the promise that He will speak to us…in our ears…audibly! [Isaiah 30:21] Since the past few weeks, I have been hinting at the Rhema Word of God – a specific word from God to a specific person for a specific time. From the Bible, I have hand-picked five individuals who heard the Voice of God that made a tremendous difference to them and to those around them.

Command – call to submission and obedience
Exodus 3:4-10
Moses heard the voice of God in the desert as he was tending sheep of his father-in-law. Moses was on the job – in the field. Very often, God will speak to us even as we are doing our work. God gives Moses a divine command to go back to Egypt and deliver the people of Israel from bondage. The voice of God demands obedience. To obey is better than sacrifice, said the prophet Samuel. [1 Samuel 15:22] Obedience is the springboard of all of God’s blessing. God will speak to us when we are faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities. Love breeds obedience. Deception flourishes where there is no love. If you love God, you will submit to Him and obey His Voice.

Consecration – Call to separation and availability
1 Samuel 3:1-10
Samuel heard the voice of God in the Temple. He was consecrated to God even before he was born by his mother. He was just a little boy when he heard the voice of God. God can speak to anyone – even a little child! He is ready to speak to anyone who is separated to Him and available for His work. Samuel did not recognize the voice of God as he was young and not used to being spoken to by God, but when he realized it was God; he was more than ready to do the will of God. God spoke to him in the stillness of the night. Be still and know that He is God! [Psalm 46:10]

Comfort – Call to solace and healing
1 Kings 19:9-18
Elijah heard the voice of God as he lay tired and hidden in the cave. God’s voice brought him comfort – a much needed reassurance that gave him solace and healing. Elijah was at a point of helplessness running away from the wicked queen Jezebel. He was filled with fear, confused by the power of evil that was at work in the nation of Israel and physically exhausted. In spite of having performed an awesome miracle by bringing down fire on the sacrifice to God, and later praying down rain here was Elijah – scared! There comes a time in life, when we may be tired, hopeless and helpless and maybe even on the run. The voice of God comforts the broken-hearted, the lonely and every hurting soul.

Commitment – Call to service and sacrifice
Matthew 3:16-17
Jesus Christ, the Son of God is the perfect example of a life that was set aside for service and sacrifice. Jesus our Lord’s life was a life of commitment to do the work of the Father. At His baptism at the River Jordan, the commending voice of the Father was heard. The Voice of God affirms His Son our Lord Jesus Christ! Jesus in obedience to the Father took on the nature of a man and gave His life as a sacrifice. It was an act of commitment based on the promise that God, the Father had given. The voice of God is a call to service and sacrifice.

Conviction – Call to sincere repentance and wholeness
Acts 9:3-6
Paul on the road to Damascus heard the voice of God calling him to sincere repentance. The voice of God convicts us to leave a life of sin. Conviction through the Voice of God may hurt but the eternal judgment that comes because of disobedience is far more painful. Learn by instruction rather than suffer through consequences. There is no blessing without a judgment, no crown without a price, no victory without a battle. The voice of God is a call to repentance and wholeness.

Jesus Himself said that His sheep knows His voice. [John 10:2-4] It is His VOICE that insulates us and empowers us through life’s journey. Put aside everything that distracts and tune your senses to listen to the voice of God. For God still speaks…..!

2 Timothy 4: 6 – “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.”

At the time of writing this letter [2 Timothy] to Timothy, Paul the Apostle was in the Roman prison awaiting execution.

Being a Roman citizen, he had the ‘privilege’ of being beheaded. It was a time of loneliness and pain. This was probably the last letter that Paul wrote and from the contents it is obvious that the solitude was taking its toll on him.

Loneliness is something that we all go through at some point or the other in life. It could be the result of the loss of a loved one, betrayal or being misunderstood. Loneliness if not dealt with wisely will lead to self-pity, which breeds depression. We are prone to take wrong-decisions in such times that will lead to destruction. Although Paul’s hardships were severe, his focus in the letter is to encourage young Timothy to be faithful! From this letter of Paul to Timothy, we can learn few lessons on dealing with loneliness.

Bring the scroll
2 Timothy 4: 13 – “Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come—and the books, especially the parchments.”

Paul was a highly intellectual man. He was tutored in the Law under Gamaliel [Acts 22:3], and knew the Word of God better than most men in his time. However, during the time of loneliness, he asks Timothy to bring him the scroll or parchments. This was probably the Word of God. When you are lonely run to the Bible and let God speak to you through His Word! While reading the Bible, keep a prayer journal at hand and jot down what God speaks to you through it. In lonely times read through this to build your spirit. The Bible is your scroll of comfort!

Battle belongs to the Lord
2 Timothy 4:14, 15 – “14Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works. 15You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words..”
Paul then warns Timothy about a man who had hurt him. Nevertheless, he chooses not to seek revenge or harm Alexander but hands him over to God! When you are lonely, the mind will dwell on those that hurt you. But God tells us not to seek revenge. God will repay those that hurt you; the battle belongs to the Lord! [Romans 12:19; Deuteronomy 32:35; 1 Samuel 17:47] You must remain in a state of SHALOM – having confidence and understanding that God is with you and He will not harm you in any way. Trust God to vindicate you!

Be prepared for lonely times
2 Timothy 4: 16 – “At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them.
Loneliness is a reality that we must face and be prepared for. It is not an abnormal event. Paul was deserted by all; He was all alone. This portion of Scripture has the heading, “The Abandoned Apostle’, in speaking about Paul’s predicament. There will be lonely stretches in your Christian walk. Jesus the Son of God also went through the pain of abandonment on the cross of Calvary. [Matthew 27:46].

Breakthrough in God’s presence
2 Timothy 4: 17 – “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me…….”
Here is where we have the answer. Paul found strength during the lonely times in the Presence of God! This is where we find our breakthrough! God stood by Paul’s side and strengthened him. David at Ziglag [2 Samuel 30:6] went through similar pain when his army and people turned against him when the Amalekites had raided their territory and captured their family and possessions. However we see that David found strength in God’s presence. When you are alone, spend time in prayer and let God’s presence give you the strength to move on.

Being fruitful in season and out of season!
2 Timothy 4: 17 …………… so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear.
In spite of the pain that Paul was going through, he did not stop preaching! He advised Timothy to be ready in season and out of season [2 Timothy 4:2], and practiced what he preached! He was more concerned and focused on reaching as many people as he could before he was executed. Interestingly, he asks for Mark with whom he had some disparity and separated. At the end of his life, in the time of loneliness, he sees things in a different perspective. He seeks to restore his relationship with the young disciple! In times of loneliness reach out to others in need.

Just as Paul turned Timothy’s attention to the faithfulness of God, we too must be brutally focused on God. God delivered Paul many times in during his ministry and the same God will deliver you too! He is faithful!

Because of He lives!

Acts 2:3, 4 – “3Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

There is a new wave of the Holy Spirit that is sweeping across the world and it is so evident in our service the last few Sundays! God is longing to pour out His Spirit in a greater measure upon His people. In order to receive the fullness of His abundance, we must have an understanding of God’s Spirit. The devil has caused confusion within the Body of Christ through distorted teachings about the Holy Spirit causing denominations and divisions. But as a child of God, it is imperative that we be filled with the Spirit of God, as the Bible clearly states in the Book of Acts.

There are two prerequisites to being in-filled with the Holy Spirit – faith in God and total surrender. Without belief in God it is impossible to please Him! [Hebrews 11:6] and speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit. There are three primary purposes of speaking in tongues:

Supernatural means of communicating with God
1 Corinthians 14:2 – “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”

Spiritual building up or edification
1 Corinthians 14:4 – “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…”

Staying and praying in the will of God
Romans 8:26,27 – “26Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

There is power in speaking in tongues and let me present to you ten benefits of this wonderful gift that God has given us.

Magnifying God!
Acts 10:45-46 – “45And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.”

Speaking in tongues is a way to magnify God. God is already BIG, you cannot make HIM greater…but you can make Him greater in your life by the things you do! When you magnify God, He becomes bigger in your life. Jesus becomes greater in everything you do. Pray in tongues every day and you will walk in His power to an extent you have not yet seen and people will notice the difference.

Maintain consciousness of the Holy Spirit’s Presence!
John 14:16-17 – “16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

Praying in tongues you will become conscious of the Presence of the Holy Spirit. Here is an important fact about the value of speaking in tongues – although speaking with tongues is the initial sign or evidence of the Holy Spirit’s infilling, continuing to pray and worship God in tongues helps us to be ever conscious of His indwelling Presence. God is abiding with us through the Holy Spirit! We will be careful in what we say and do, when we are conscious that God’s Spirit is with us!

Means of worshiping God!
John 4:23 – “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Speaking in other tongues will not only make you more aware of the Holy Spirit’s Presence in your life, but it will also aid you in worshiping God! In the process your spirit will become more sensitive to the things of God. When you continually worship God by praying in tongues you will experience spiritual enrichment provided by this supernatural gift!

Motivate faith in God!
Jude 20 – “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit…”

Praying in tongues stimulate or motivate faith in God. As a believer we must charge our faith by hearing the Word of God and by praying in the Holy Spirit. [Romans 10:17] When we pray in the Spirit, the Holy Ghost supernaturally directs the words we speak. We have to exercise our faith to speak in tongues. We don’t know what the next word will be, so we keep trusting the Holy Spirit to give it to us. Since praying in tongues stimulates and motivates your faith, it also helps you learn to trust God more fully in every area.

Mode of Spiritual Refreshing!
Isaiah 28:11,12 – “11 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, 12To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”
Speaking in tongues gives Spiritual Refreshing. We experience God’s rest and refreshing when we get filled with the Spirit and speak with other tongues. In these days of turmoil and anxiety we need spiritual rest and refreshing like never before. Whenever we want we can be refreshed by the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues!

Manner of Thanksgiving!
1 Corinthians 14:14-17 – “14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17For you indeed give thanks well..”

Tongues provide the best way to give thanks. It’s good for us to give thanks to God by praying in tongues. Apostle Paul is saying here that giving thanks in tongues provides the most perfect way to pray and to give thanks especially when we are by ourselves.

Monitor and bring the tongue under subjection!
James 3:8 – “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Speaking in tongues helps bring the tongue under subjection. We can monitor what our tongue speaks! Notice this verse says, “no man can tame the tongue” but GOD can! When you yield your tongue to the Holy Spirit and speak with other tongues, you take a giant step towards fully yielding all your members to God! If you can yield the most unruly member to God, you can yield any member of your body to HIM! The sin of the tongue is an abomination to God. So when you surrender to the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues you bring the tongue under subjection.

Makes you protected from the contamination of the world!
1 Corinthians 14:28 – “…let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
This Scripture means that you are to keep yourself from unnecessary talk. Whether it is in Church or office or any public place, you can pray in tongues in order to keep yourself from being contaminated by the evil of this world.

Method of Introduction to the Gifts of the Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:1-11 – “1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

Speaking in tongues is the introduction to the gifts of the Spirit. Speaking with other tongues is the doorway into the supernatural realm of God. The infilling of the Holy Spirit and the practise of praying in other tongues on a regular basis is the doorway to all the other benefits and spiritual equipment that are ours.

Might in the inner man!
Ephesians 3:14-16 – “14For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man..”

We need the spiritual edification we receive from praying in tongues. The Apostle Paul also gave us a Holy Spirit prayer in Ephesians 3 so these believers could receive mighty strengthening power in their inner man to put them over in life. You need to be infused with mighty power in your inner man by God’s Spirit! The enemy never stops launching attacks against your faith and your life but the devil is repulsed when your inward man is strengthened with the Holy Spirit might!

I hope you understand the powerful implications of what I have stated regarding speaking in tongues. May God give you the hunger to seek more of His Spirit so that you can live a life of victory.

Luke 14:33 – “So then, any of you who does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to, give up, say good-bye to) all that he has cannot be My disciple.” [Amplified]

The word “surrender” conjures up in our minds an army that has been defeated under bloody circumstances and giving-in to the authority of the victorious opponent under pressure. Therefore, we have a negative mentality towards surrender. But to a Christian, surrender has a whole new meaning. Here is how I define surrender, “Yielding in total abandonment to God [Superior Power], giving up all rights in acknowledgment and acceptance of His divine Will [authority].”

Change occurs at the point of surrender. We can call ourselves a disciple of Christ, only when we are willing to surrender….everything to God. Every turning-point in your life is a result of surrender. “Surrender-moments” are moments of destiny. As we look at four personalities from the Bible, I would like to expound about surrender from the Word of God.

Act of Obedience to God’s Word – Noah
Genesis 6:22 – “Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
The first aspect of surrender to God is obedience, of which Noah is a perfect example. He pleased God by obeying God implicitly. When God decided to destroy the earth with flood, He commanded Noah to build an ark. Until that time it had not rained on the earth, but still Noah obeyed God. Obedience breeds the blessings of God in your life, for it pleases God like nothing else! God speaks to us through His “Rhema” Word [which is a specific spoken word, to a specific person for a specific time] and through the “Written” Word, which is the Bible. The primary way to surrender to God is to obey His Word.

Affirmation of Faith in God’s Way – Abraham
Genesis 22:1-5 – “1Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”And he said, “Here I am.” 2Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”

Surrendering to God means to place utmost faith in His Ways. Abraham’s life was marked by the faith he displayed in God. He probably did not understand why God was demanding his promised son Isaac to be offered as a sacrifice, but he chose to trust His Word and His way. God will NOT lead you through a path that will destroy you. He knows the best WAY for you and He wants the ultimate good for your life. Faith is being confident of God’s love and surrendering to His ways. Isaiah 55:8 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. God’s ways are not like man’s ways, His knowledge and methods are unfathomable!

Approach of Selflessness to God’s Work – Esther
Esther 4:16 – “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

Queen Esther proved her selflessness when she chose to risk her life and approach the King to plead for the Jews – God’s chosen people. Surrendering to God means to be self-less to the work of God. There is no room for ‘selfishness’ in the Kingdom of God. Your miracle comes when you stop thinking about yourself. When you are willing to let go off your rights and are willing to deny yourself, you have reached the point of surrender. When God’s Work takes priority above your interests you have surrendered to God. In Isaiah 6, we see how dramatically the prophet Isaiah surrendered to God and cried out, “Lord, send me!” When he saw a vision of God, he just surrendered to the work that was assigned to him!

Attitude of Submission to God’s Will – Jesus Christ
Matthew 26:39 – “He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
The fourth and final aspect of surrender is total submission to God’s Will. The Son of God is the perfect example of submission! The writer of Hebrews says that God heard His cries because of Jesus’ reverent submission. [Hebrews 5:7] The Cross is a sign of sacrificial obedience to God’s Will. Christians are known by the CROSS – because this is where surrender completed the work!

The Apostle Paul called himself a bondservant to Christ [Romans 1:1], with the knowledge that the Bible calls us prisoners of hope [Zechariah 9:12]. Surrendering is the only way to live as a child of God. Your moment of destiny lies at the point of your surrender. Yield to the will of God and let God’s wonderful plan unfold before you!
