Acts 2:3, 4 – “3Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
There is a new wave of the Holy Spirit that is sweeping across the world and it is so evident in our service the last few Sundays! God is longing to pour out His Spirit in a greater measure upon His people. In order to receive the fullness of His abundance, we must have an understanding of God’s Spirit. The devil has caused confusion within the Body of Christ through distorted teachings about the Holy Spirit causing denominations and divisions. But as a child of God, it is imperative that we be filled with the Spirit of God, as the Bible clearly states in the Book of Acts.
There are two prerequisites to being in-filled with the Holy Spirit – faith in God and total surrender. Without belief in God it is impossible to please Him! [Hebrews 11:6] and speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit. There are three primary purposes of speaking in tongues:
Supernatural means of communicating with God
1 Corinthians 14:2 – “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”
Spiritual building up or edification
1 Corinthians 14:4 – “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…”
Staying and praying in the will of God
Romans 8:26,27 – “26Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
There is power in speaking in tongues and let me present to you ten benefits of this wonderful gift that God has given us.
Acts 10:45-46 – “45And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.”
Speaking in tongues is a way to magnify God. God is already BIG, you cannot make HIM greater…but you can make Him greater in your life by the things you do! When you magnify God, He becomes bigger in your life. Jesus becomes greater in everything you do. Pray in tongues every day and you will walk in His power to an extent you have not yet seen and people will notice the difference.
Maintain consciousness of the Holy Spirit’s Presence!
John 14:16-17 – “16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
Praying in tongues you will become conscious of the Presence of the Holy Spirit. Here is an important fact about the value of speaking in tongues – although speaking with tongues is the initial sign or evidence of the Holy Spirit’s infilling, continuing to pray and worship God in tongues helps us to be ever conscious of His indwelling Presence. God is abiding with us through the Holy Spirit! We will be careful in what we say and do, when we are conscious that God’s Spirit is with us!
Means of worshiping God!
John 4:23 – “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
Speaking in other tongues will not only make you more aware of the Holy Spirit’s Presence in your life, but it will also aid you in worshiping God! In the process your spirit will become more sensitive to the things of God. When you continually worship God by praying in tongues you will experience spiritual enrichment provided by this supernatural gift!
Motivate faith in God!
Jude 20 – “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit…”
Praying in tongues stimulate or motivate faith in God. As a believer we must charge our faith by hearing the Word of God and by praying in the Holy Spirit. [Romans 10:17] When we pray in the Spirit, the Holy Ghost supernaturally directs the words we speak. We have to exercise our faith to speak in tongues. We don’t know what the next word will be, so we keep trusting the Holy Spirit to give it to us. Since praying in tongues stimulates and motivates your faith, it also helps you learn to trust God more fully in every area.
Mode of Spiritual Refreshing!
Isaiah 28:11,12 – “11 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, 12To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”
Speaking in tongues gives Spiritual Refreshing. We experience God’s rest and refreshing when we get filled with the Spirit and speak with other tongues. In these days of turmoil and anxiety we need spiritual rest and refreshing like never before. Whenever we want we can be refreshed by the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues!
Manner of Thanksgiving!
1 Corinthians 14:14-17 – “14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17For you indeed give thanks well..”
Tongues provide the best way to give thanks. It’s good for us to give thanks to God by praying in tongues. Apostle Paul is saying here that giving thanks in tongues provides the most perfect way to pray and to give thanks especially when we are by ourselves.
Monitor and bring the tongue under subjection!
James 3:8 – “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Speaking in tongues helps bring the tongue under subjection. We can monitor what our tongue speaks! Notice this verse says, “no man can tame the tongue” but GOD can! When you yield your tongue to the Holy Spirit and speak with other tongues, you take a giant step towards fully yielding all your members to God! If you can yield the most unruly member to God, you can yield any member of your body to HIM! The sin of the tongue is an abomination to God. So when you surrender to the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues you bring the tongue under subjection.
Makes you protected from the contamination of the world!
1 Corinthians 14:28 – “…let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
This Scripture means that you are to keep yourself from unnecessary talk. Whether it is in Church or office or any public place, you can pray in tongues in order to keep yourself from being contaminated by the evil of this world.
Method of Introduction to the Gifts of the Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:1-11 – “1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
Speaking in tongues is the introduction to the gifts of the Spirit. Speaking with other tongues is the doorway into the supernatural realm of God. The infilling of the Holy Spirit and the practise of praying in other tongues on a regular basis is the doorway to all the other benefits and spiritual equipment that are ours.
Might in the inner man!
Ephesians 3:14-16 – “14For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man..”
We need the spiritual edification we receive from praying in tongues. The Apostle Paul also gave us a Holy Spirit prayer in Ephesians 3 so these believers could receive mighty strengthening power in their inner man to put them over in life. You need to be infused with mighty power in your inner man by God’s Spirit! The enemy never stops launching attacks against your faith and your life but the devil is repulsed when your inward man is strengthened with the Holy Spirit might!
I hope you understand the powerful implications of what I have stated regarding speaking in tongues. May God give you the hunger to seek more of His Spirit so that you can live a life of victory.
Because He lives!
